An interesting thesis, but I disagree. You are right in the fact that they paint a picture of a society in which this is true, however neither Jane or Bertha quite fit into this category of women.
I both agree and disagree with this thesis. I agree because minor characters tend to aid men throughout both novels and I agree because the main characters such as Jane and Antoinette seem to rebel against men.
I agree with your thesis but your evidence would be limited. Minor characters fall under this category of "obedient" women, however Jane and Antoinette do not. Also, the thesis itself is a little confusing as previously stated. I understand what you mean but it could use some revision to make it clearer.
Go for it. This is risky but entirely provable. One question: are the authors literally depicting this or are they depicting a society that expects aid as a role for women? If the latter, you need to explicitly state it in your thesis.

ReplyDeleteI'm kind of confused as to what you are saying. Is it that men's role is to aid women or that women need men's aid?

ReplyDeleteClean up your wording to make it more understandable.
