Commenting on comment: Jane was non-existant in Wide Sargasso Sea.
Commenting on thesis:I think your statement is invalid. WSS was written by a different author and therefore is not a legitamate "prequel". Technically, WSS is completely unrelated to JE.
Tim - The statement is perfectly valid. Perhaps a better statement would be "the respective authors' interpretation of what each character represents," but nonetheless...
Gabriella - One thing you might want to consider. The perspective does shift between the novels, obviously, but what about the perspective shifts within Wide Sargasso Sea itself? Does the "reveal what each character represents" part still apply in the same way?
Please explain the validity of the statement,Megan. Interpretation is one thing, expanding on a (practically non-existent) backstory for Antoinette is a whole new animal. I can't understand why WSS is treated so seriously; it's more like fan-fiction than anything else.
Maybe also include how the changing perspectives in 'Wide Sargasso Sea' is important to the novel: so state how it makes the novel stronger to "reveal what each charcter represents".
Aside from the validity of this, you need to explicitly state what each character represents in the content of your thesis statement: Perspective shifts between the novels to reveal A about A and B about B
Good thesis Gabriella. This is a good point, if both novels were written in Jane's perspective, other characters would not have as much dynamic.
